The Cubs are the real deal
The Cubs have been named Australia’s most successful sports franchise, with a record $1.5 billion in revenue and more than 4 million fans.
The announcement comes as Australia prepares to celebrate its centenary.AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the team had achieved a great deal in the past 20 years and had made a significant contribution to the Australian economy.
“It is great to be able to celebrate our centenary in the first week of October with the most successful sport in Australia and in the world, with more than four million fans and a record-breaking revenue of $1 billion,” he said.
“We are very proud to have helped lift Australia’s economy through the great recession of the late 2000s and have seen our economy grow to $2.3 trillion annually.”
The team has become one of the most popular sports franchises in the country and we are proud of the team’s incredible success.
“The AFL said it was proud of a range of achievements for the team including a record of winning the National Basketball League (NBA) title in 2016, winning the Australian Grand Prix for the first time in 2017, winning Australian Open golf titles in 2018 and the 2019 Australian Open, the 2019 Commonwealth Games, the 2020 Sydney Olympics and the 2020 Commonwealth Games.”
Our team has been a key part of the Australian sporting landscape for many years, including hosting the Australian Open in 2019, the AFL Grand Final in 2020, the World Series of Golf, the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Open in 2021 and 2022,” Mr McLachlans statement said.
It added that the club had achieved an incredible record of revenue in the five years to September 2017 of $2,973 million, making it the second-most successful Australian sporting franchise behind only the AFL.”
For the first five years of its existence, the club has consistently delivered record revenues, which are reflected in its record of financial performance, as well as a commitment to invest in the Club,” it said.
The AFL also announced that the AFL would provide funding for a new $200 million training centre to be built on the site of the AFL’s old Fitzroy Oval.
The club will continue to host major events including the grand final, the premiership, the national championships and the Australian Championships.”
This is an important milestone in our Club’s history, and we thank all our fans for their continued support,” Mr McGuinness said.
